Asphalt Repair and Asphalt Patching

Asphalt RepairAsphalt patching is a common asphalt repair on areas of asphalt pavement with potholes. Potholes occur when water seeps into asphalt pavement through unsealed or improperly sealed cracks. When the water freezes, it expands and enlarges the cracks in the asphalt. When the ice under the pavement melts, a void is left. The surrounding asphalt pavement falls into the void and forms a pothole.

Benefits of Infrared Asphalt Repairing

Infrared asphalt repairs allow deep penetration repair and recycling without causing burning, scaling, or separation of the asphalt from the aggregate. Other benefits of asphalt repair over asphalt replacement include: cost savings because the project is completed with less raw materials; time savings because this repair option takes less time than traditional asphalt resurfacing; seamless asphalt repairs are better and last longer because the patch bonds to existing surface and produces no joints for water to penetrate and fewer traffic interruptions because the patch can be driven on almost immediately. Infrared patching: Heat existing asphalt surface, remove damaged asphalt, add new or recycled hot mix to area, set the grade and compact. Large or small asphalt repairs can be performed.

Asphalt patching: Areas that have base deterioration or other damage that is beyond repair will be corrected and new pavement will be installed.

Asphalt Resurfacing and Blacktop Resurfacing

In more extreme cases of asphalt failure, a long-term and cost-effective solution is to resurface the asphalt pavement (also referred to as overlay). If you notice grade depressions (standing water on the pavement) and/or large sections of alligatored areas (interconnecting cracks in the asphalt, which forms a series of blocks resembling an alligator’s skin), it is a good idea to have your pavement resurfaced.

Asphalt Repair – How it Works

Infrared Asphalt Repair and Asphalt Patching Process

  • Infrared Asphalt Repair Process Step Three

Infrared Asphalt Repair Process – Step Three
Once the pavement is sufficiently softened, the heater is removed. A steel rake is used to cut a square around the damage, leaving at least 6″ of the heated surface undisturbed. The rake is then used to scarify the asphalt inside the square area.

Then an “asphaltic” rejuvenator is sprayed onto the existing asphalt to replace the light oils that have oxidized out with age. Fresh Hot Mix asphalt is added to bring the low area back up to grade.
